The 'Shop For The Future' project, inspired by the growth of pre-loved goods market, recognises the exciting variety of second-hand shops run by charities as a unique strength. It proposes to leverage this to create a distinct shopping experience that will increase numbers of visitors and their length of stay, attract more independent shops and create a more diverse and vibrant high street.
Up For Yorkshire's sustainability programme, Our Zero Selby, started the project by creating a collaborative network with the 13 in town charities to help them work together to create campaigns to encourage locals to practice ‘smart giving’ to improve the quality of donations and to direct other items to the household waste recycling centre.
Matt Fisher, Up For Yorkshire Community Development Lead said:
“Our high streets are changing, and we’re committed to ensuring Selby’s town centre thrives. We know that attracting more residents and visitors, encouraging them to stay longer, and creating a unique town identity are key. Shop for the Future looks to the growth of Vinted, Ebay, Depop and Facebook Marketplace and the benefits of buying ‘pre-loved’ items, as a starting point for change. What we have now is a wealth of second-hand shops run by charities, and we will treat them as a strength and a reason to visit Selby and stay for a unique shopping experience."
