Forget the catwalk, trend-led womenswear is dropping on Ealing Broadway in Fight for Sight’s much-loved charity shop. Thanks to one incredible donation from a popular online retailer, Fight for Sight is offering new-with-tags clothing at charity shops prices (all tops £3, all dresses £5 etc). It’s a limited run pop-up you won’t want to miss, plus the charity is setting themselves the epic target of saving 8 tonnes of brand-new clothing from landfill in just four weeks.
From Thursday August 21st, shoppers will be able to walk out with brand new women’s clothing – and each item will cost less than £8. Numbers are expected to be high, so get in early to avoid the queues!
Womenswear expected to fly off the shelves
The hotly anticipated Ealing Fashion Drop (#ealingfashiondrop) will run for a limited time only, and the bargain stock is expected to fly off the rails, so local fashionistas are advised to be quick if they don’t want to miss out! The charity is also running an invite-only preview event on Wednesday for local Ealing and charity shop influencers.
Formerly Vision Foundation, the recently refurbished Ealing Fight for Sight charity shop usually offers new, preloved, vintage and designer fashion, as well as hidden gems for the home, with proceeds funding scientific research and social change projects supporting everyone impacted by vision loss.
The charity’s recent windfall of brand-new clothing, which includes dresses, skirts, trousers, tops, jackets, swimwear and more, has been donated by an incredibly generous online fashion retailer. By accepting the clothing to sell in its Ealing shop, Fight for Sight, which is committed to sustainable fashion, is rescuing the stock from landfill.
Diving in to save the environment
Those who ‘dive in’ for a bargain wardrobe refresh will also be doing their bit for the environment.
The donated stock – around 20,000 pieces of clothing in total – weighs an incredible 8 tonnes. Which, based on industry data from WRAP and the UK Government’s greenhouse gas conversion factors, is:
Up to 80 million litres of water saved, about the same as 32 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
The equivalent of 16–24 tonnes of CO₂ saved, which is roughly the same as taking 5–7 average UK cars off the road for a year.
“It’s very exciting to have such an enormous donation of fabulous brand-new stock to offer to our Ealing customers. Fight for Sight is committed to sustainable fashion, so we are thrilled to have been able to rescue these clothes from landfill.”
Investing in sight-saving research
In total, the store will cycle through 20,000 units of stock – at an average price of £5 per item, that could net up to £100,000 for the charity whose vision is to Save Sight. Change Lives.
That’s enough to fund multiple grants.
An example of a recently awarded Project Grant is that of Professor Marcela Votruba whose work focuses on finding answers regarding a rare inherited condition that causes sudden vision loss, typically in young men in their late teens and early twenties.
“We may be able to intervene at an earlier stage and save sight. The idea is to work on treatments that we could apply to either prolong sight or even reverse the vision loss,” said the professor speaking about the potential of her Fight for Sight funded research.
Every purchase made at Fight for Sight’s new shops helps fund innovative research and life-changing projects that support blind and vision impaired people. With 79p from every item sold contributing to cutting-edge scientific work and social change projects, shoppers will be directly helping to transform lives.
Fight for Sight’s Ealing shop - 12 The Broadway, London W5 2NH - is usually open Monday – Saturday, 11:00 am – 6:00 pm, and Sunday, 11:00am – 5:00 pm.
